Pomegranates

Pomegranates are well known for various reasons such as: vivid colour and a refreshing, wine-like flavour while being rich in antioxidants and other nutrients.

Pomegranate is one of the most important fruit crops grown commercially in the state of Maharashtra. The area cultivated under this crop is 125,000 hectares. Maharashtra accounts for more than two thirds of the area, with Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu sharing the rest.

The two most commercially grown varieties are Ganesh & Bhagwa. Bhagwa is the more popular variety because of its attactive, saffron-coloured thick skin. The cherry red colour, clean skin and bold arils have increased its cosmetic appearance and market value in comparison to other varieties. These qualities make Bhagwa the most popular variety for the domestic and export market.

Fruits range from 200 to 350 grams and are packaged in 3 and 3.5kg boxes.
